Head Teacher

Sycamore House School – Withernsea
Earnings: £33,797.33 to £38,717.33 per annum dependent on qualifications and experience

Main Purpose of Job

  • Promote, support and maintain the development of an efficient, effective, professional and comprehensive education service
  • Ensure all aspects of safeguarding and child protection protocols are adhered to with continued regard to the safety and welfare of all pupils
  • Work in partnership with all stakeholders and relevant professionals to ensure that all pupils receive their statutory entitlement to education and achieve the best possible outcomes to improve their life chances
  • Promote and maintain a culture of respect and tolerance that celebrates diversity and challenges prejudice

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching and Learning

  • Lead in the design and implementation of a curriculum which is broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated for all pupils
  • Promote and secure good teaching, effective learning and achievement
  • Ensure and maintain exemplary standards of behaviour and attendance
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of learning and achievement of all pupils, in order to set and meet Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-limited targets for improvement
  • Challenge under performance at all levels with appropriate strategies and interventions
  • Monitor , evaluate and review classroom practice and promote improvement strategies
  • Ensure there is a consistent and continuous focus on pupil assessment and attainment, using a range of assessment ‘tools’, approaches and robust data analysis to set, monitor and evaluate individual pupil progress
  • Create a nurturing environment which is sensitive to the pastoral care needs of each pupil
  • Prepare annual reviews, annual reports and any other relevant educational report to parents, carers and relevant others, for every pupil in your group

The post requires you to teach pupils in the age range of the care home to which the school is attached.  Your timetable should take account of the needs and interests of the young people, the requirements of the National Curriculum and the current needs of the school.


  • Support students to develop positives strategies to understand and cope with community situations
  • Ensure that there are a range of community based learning experiences for students
  • Develop and maintain strong community links through collaboration with local organisations, agencies and charities

Leading and Managing Staff

  • Develop, motivate and lead all staff to achieve and maintain the highest possible professional standards
  • Build a collaborative learning culture within the school and actively engage members of the care team
  • Ensure the management of staff performance is reviewed and delivered in accordance with the Performance Management Policy for Education Staff
  • Lead by example to ensure that all staff have high expectations of pupil achievement and success is celebrated

Operational/Strategic Planning

  • Oversee the whole school improvement plan, by identifying strengths and weaknesses and implementing strategies for change
  • Lead in the whole school evaluation and school improvement plan
  • Lead in any school inspection under Ofsted’s Common Inspection Framework
  • Manage the review, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school and implement strategies for improvement

Managing the school

  • Liaise with the Head of Education to ensure that all policies and procedures remain robust, accessible and relevant
  • Ensure that all Health and Safety regulations are met in accordance with the school’s Health and Safety Policy and Procedures
  • Ensure that all responsibilities delegated by the Head of Education are met
  • Manage the school’s human, financial and physical resources effectively ensuring best value for money at all times and in accordance with policy and procedure
  • Raise matters of concerns with the Head of Education as appropriate and propose realistic and workable solutions to issues identified
  • Ensure the school premises are fit for purpose for current and future needs
  • Undertake other such duties as may be reasonably expected


  • Create and develop a school in which all staff recognise that they are accountable for the success of the school and these accountabilities are clearly defined, understood and agreed
  • Ensure that parents, pupils, care staff and relevant professionals are well informed about the curriculum, attainment and progress, and about the contribution they can make to achieving the school’s target for improvement
  • Provide a coherent and accurate report and data analysis of individual pupil performance and progress to relevant stakeholders

Continuing Professional Development

  • Review from time to time your methods of teaching and programmes of study
  • Keep abreast of current developments in education.
  • Participate in arrangements for your further training and professional development as a teacher as appropriate
  • Participate in any arrangements within a national framework for the appraisal of your performance and that of others where appropriate
  • Contribute to the professional development of other teachers and non-teaching staff including the induction and assessment of new and probationary teachers

Other requirements

Hexagon Care Services is a national provider of children’s home and the post holder maybe expected to teach at other sites that are a reasonable distance to travel.
